Two breakers can be rated 200 amps, two poles and 120/240 volts without being mechanically interchangeable. It’s important to consider lug positions, bus connections, mounting orientation, terminal barriers and retaining hardware.

Before removing the original breaker, photograph its label, installed position, terminals and hardware. Photographs help a supplier or electrician identify details that may not be obvious from the catalog number alone.

Start by matching the original ampere rating. The main breaker can’t exceed the maximum rating allowed by the load-center label, bus and service design.

Next, verify voltage, pole configuration and interrupting rating. A typical MPD2150 or MPD2200 is a two-pole, 120/240-volt breaker with a 10 kA interrupting rating, but you should rely on the markings for your specific breaker.

Interrupting rating describes the fault current the breaker can safely interrupt under specified conditions. It isn’t the same as its continuous ampere rating.

You also need to check the breaker frame and mounting arrangement. Confirm the load center calls for MD-T or MD-TR, how the breaker engages the bus and any special retaining hardware is required.

Finally, compare the lugs and conductors. Verify the number of conductors permitted per terminal, copper or aluminum compatibility and the acceptable wire-size range. Legacy Murray catalog information lists up to #1-300 kcmil Cu/Al for applicable 150- to 200-amp MD-family breakers, but the markings on the installed equipment are your controlling reference.

Certain Murray load-center labels associate the MD-T family with Siemens QN breakers and the reverse MD-TR configuration with Siemens QNR breakers. That relationship can guide your research, but it doesn’t authorize a substitution by itself.

Before selecting a QN or QNR breaker, verify the Siemens type is listed on the load-center label or supported by Siemens documentation for your catalog number. You must also match amperage, voltage, interrupting rating, terminal position, orientation and required hardware.

Don’t assume a new breaker will correct heat damage where the original breaker connected to the bus. The bus and surrounding components should be inspected before the equipment is returned to service.
